Hording the Gospel?

Please read, and pray, about the implications of this article by Tim Avery at LeadershipJournal.net.  How can we do even more in our community along with our Free Med Clinic, HelathyU, Food for Life, Blood Drives, Free Panera bread, possibly tutoring, after school care, Recovery Ministry, affordable housing…etc. etc… to reach out and meet the needs of our community?   Is God placing anything on your heart, or on our hearts collectively?  We’re being blessed, in order to bless others… this “gospel” of Good News is just too precious to horde!  Glenn

How to speak his name in a “serve but don’t proselytize” world

Tim Avery

“Fifteen years ago, some Christians volunteered to help serve and prepare food for a New York City AIDS hospice with a clientele primarily of homosexual men. Since the hospice was involved in the gay rights movement, its administrators were nervous about letting church volunteers inside their doors. They made the expectations clear: you can come and serve, but don’t proselytize.”

Women’s Bible Study begins September 25

All Ladies – You are invited to join a women’s Bible study on Sabbath mornings.  We will pray, listen, learn, and encourage each other—as women do.

On September 25, 2010 we will begin the Beth Moore Bible study “A journey through the Psalms of ascent”.  These are the Psalms that begin with 120 and end with 134.  We will find meaning in some of the most beautifully poetic passages of the Bible.  Yet they are more than just poetry.  They are passages that speak deeply to our hearts of God’s love for us.

“I lift up my eyes to the hills  — where does my help come from?

My help comes from the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip — he who watches over you will not slumber.”

Psalm 121:1-3

“Superficiality is the curse of our age.” – Richard Foster

Crossroads exists for all of you. We deeply value creating space that allows for authenticity, for the real you to be embraced, welcomed and brought into the presence of God.

We welcome you, the real you, to join us this Friday at 7 pm as we open our doors for prayer. In prayer we learn to allow God and others to see us as we really are. We receive permission to live authentically and openly as we join with others in a conversation with God and as we come to stillness in contemplative prayer. Opportunities for both will be available.

Potluck and Prayer on September 17

“I think my experience with prayer is not much different from most – the Jesus I was raised with was a cosmic santa claus. You had to be flattering to butter Him up, but also concise, as He was very busy…… Many years later I still fight my early tendencies, yet struggle I will.

“Coming to our prayer sessions on Friday nights has been a good exercise for me. I am not always in the mood but the discipline is so good in my life.

“Learning to give God control, trying to discern what His plans are, and letting Him allign my heart to His is never a boring ride! Not always easy, always worthwhile.”

– Nancy Sayers, member at Crossroads

We will begin with a potluck dinner together at 6:30. Following dinner, we will spend about an hour in prayer and finish up around 8:00. For prayer, you may wish to join our prayer circle to pray together with other people. You may also wish to engage in contemplative prayer where you can focus on God in a quiet place, without the disctractions that bombard us all week.

Depression Recovery Program

The Depression Recovery Program is a mental health education resource available in Sacramento, California.  This eight week depression recovery program utilizes a number of scientifically proven self-help strategies that can improve mental health. The program keeps participants on medications that may have been prescribed for them. The program does not replace one’s doctor and does not substitute for a clinical psychologist in performing psychotherapy.

The program meets once a week for eight weeks. Each week includes an educational lecture (on DVD) and a break-out workbook session. Each weekly session lasts less than two hours. The program is strictly educational in nature. No voodoo or unproven “alternative” therapies are recommended. The program is professionally designed, and the content is from peer-reviewed scientific and medical journals.

The surgeon general has called major depression an “epidemic” in America. This program is an additional tool to help combat the epidemic.

A free introductory session will be held on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at 6:30 PM. The location will be at Natomas Crossroads Church, 1101 National Drive, Suite A, Sacramento, CA.

Rethinking Depression: How to Fill in Your Potholes

Dr. Arlene R. Taylor

Dr. Taylor, founder and president of Realizations Inc, a nonprofit corporation pledged to promote brain-function research, returns to Healthy U in September with a 50-minute seminar to teach men and women how to rethink depression.

Using the “pothole metaphor,” a variety of challenges and contributory components are included such as: genetics and epigenetics, gender differences, age of onset, hormonal imbalances, lack of specific micronutrients, and symptoms.

If you have experienced a bout of depression, situational or clinical, or have dealt with a family member or friend who was depressed, you already know the toll this can take on everyone.  Strategies for prevention and for recovery do exist.  A two-pronged approach can be helpful in filling in personal potholes; in enhancing your ability to prevent (insofar as it is possible to do so), recognize symptoms quickly, and/or recover from depression.

Dr. Taylor’s goals in all her empowering presentations are to help people understand more about brain function in general, and to help individuals identify personal innate giftedness so they can manage their brain’s unique energy advantage effectively and thrive.

Arlene began her professional career as a registered nurse.  Years of working in acute hospitals, and in K-12 schools, provided her with a rich base from which to practically apply brain-function information in a variety of settings.  Eventually she added a master’s degree and two earned doctorates to her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

An internationally known writer and speaker, Dr. Taylor includes brain function research into her presentations.  The information she shares, when practically applied, can help people to be more successful — by design.  Audiences around the world have found her to be an engaging and imaginative speaker.

Dinner service begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by the presentation at 7:00 p.m. Space is limited and cost is $10 per person. Please call 916-835-8132 for reservations or email to charleen.HealthyU(a)gmail.com.
